Vital ‘Nutrient’ You Are Probably Missing!

What is Vitamin D (Besides the Sunshine Vitamin)?

Vitamin D actually more specifically Vitamin D3 is the human form of Vitamin D. D2 should not be in your supplement. It is 85% less efficient than Vitamin D3 and can actually hinder your body’s Vitamin D3 production.  Vitamin D3 positively affects 2000-3000 genes in your body that are related to chronic disease prevention and now studies are showing beneficial for treatment of a long list of ailments. Bottom line: Optimal Levels of Vitamin D promotes health and well-being! I’m in and I hope you are too!

5 Ways to Minimize Toxins That Will Have a BIG Impact

What are toxins?

  • I could write down the dictionary definition, but I’ll explain a little more. Toxins are contaminates or harmful chemicals that come from food, water, the air, and the environment. Some are pollutants that are difficult to avoid, but some are chemicals from places we can minimize our exposure like in our home, our water, our food, our personal care products, or our cleaning products. If you think about it, there are a lot of areas to improve on. Your choices do make a difference!

Why do we want to remove them from our body and environment?

  • Mainly, toxins affect our health negatively. They hinder our normal cell function and the consequences of that are not good; irritations, allergies, skin conditions, hormone imbalance or worst, chronic disease. It is true, your body was designed (by the grace of our intelligent God) to filter out and detox our bodies through our liver, kidneys, sweat glands, lungs, and skin. However, chemicals and pollutants are increasing and ever-changing. And most of the time, you can’t even pronounce the stuff in the processed foods and products we take into our homes. Also, what is YOUR body’s threshold for tolerance of toxin exposure? Is there a test for that? Nope. Sooo…let’s make small doable changes to minimize the exposure we can control and celebrate each accomplishment. Your body and your family’s bodies will thank you for YOUR informed choices.

How do we minimize toxins entering our bodies?

  • The best way to minimize toxins is do not allow them in your body in the first place. Here are 5 ways I want to highlight for you:
    1. Eat REAL Food: Whole foods (not processed) focused on locally grown and ideally, organic. Do not ever eat produce in the Dirty Dozen + 2 list that are not organic. Don’t eat meat or dairy that is not organic. These are big culprits of hormones, antibiotics, and pesticides. I will be posting only tasty, real food recipes to help with this. Also, find a local farmer for meat and eggs and start your own organic garden if possible.
    2. Cookware and Storage Containers: Replace non-stick cookware with ceramic and glass cookware. Chemicals and metals can easily leach into your food. Use glass storage containers and baby bottles instead of plastic. Even BPA-free does not mean harmless and does not mean there aren’t other chemicals that are lurking in plastics that are directly touching your food.
    3. Filter Tap Water: I recommend filtering water for cooking, drinking, and bathing. Use a reverse osmosis system (we use Hydrotech, but I can’t find a link for it) for your cooking and drinking water. The RO filters are usually changed out annually. This is the best filtering option for all of the chemicals in our water. Also, I recommend a whole house carbon filter for just that your “whole house”. It is put in and replaced about every 10 years. Initially, these items are a bigger investment, but they are good items to save for and reward your entire family with. Once they are installed, there isn’t much to think about or maintain.
    4. Start DIY’s for personal care and cleaning products: This is the easiest way to know exactly what you are putting on yourself, your kids, and on surfaces in your home while cleaning. With YL essential oils, baking soda, shea butter, castile soap, coconut oil, vinegar, and jojoba oil, you will be amazed at all of the awesome and effective products you can make yourself. Here are 9 ingredients to avoid and look for in your products:
      • Parabens – linked to certain types of cancers. Found in make-up, body wash and shampoos.
      • Phthalates – endocrine disruptors, birth defects, and cancers. Found in deodorants, moisturizers, perfumes, and hairsprays.
      • Synthetic colors (FD&C, D&C) – linked to neurological issues and cancers. Found in any product that is colored.
      • Fragrance – doesn’t sounds scary, but according to Environmental Working Group most are linked to dermatitis, allergies, and effects to the reproductive system. Found in any product that has a smell. Don’t you wish all companies would just use essential oils as their fragrance?
      • Triclosan – popular in anti-bacterial products (hand sanitizers, soaps, tooth paste, anything anti-bacterial). This chemical is linked to thyroid issues, reproductive hormone issues, and is contributing to our antibiotic-resistant bacteria (that is no longer just a concern, it has been found in patients in China; MRC-1 gene mutation). Very bad!
      • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)/Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) – be aware of any spin that may occur to the middle word in this chemical name, it is the same thing. This is a known carcinogen found in 90% of our personal care and cleaning products.
      • Formaldehyde or Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives (FRP) – linked to nasal cancers and harmful to the immune system. Found in nail stuff, shampoos, and cleansers.
      • Propylene Glycol – “skin conditioning agent” linked to dermatitis and hives.
      • Toluene – may cause damage to a developing fetus and respiratory issues. Found in nail stuff and hair dying/bleaching products.
    • Obviously, there is a major concern and huge negligence about the chemicals in our beauty products, cleaning products, and foods. Please be diligent and read your ingredient labels. If you are not sure if a chemical is dangerous either search for the MSDS/SDS (material safety data sheet or safety data sheet) online for the chemical itself or JUST DON’T BUY IT OR THROW IT AWAY. I will help you on your journey with DIY’s so you know exactly what is in your products.
    1. However, some toxins will get into your body and your best option is to detoxify your body. The best way is with food and on a regular basis. Make it part of your lifestyle not a task.
      • Best Foods for Detoxing:
        1. Organic, virgin, cold-pressed coconut oil (I have to say all of that because not all oils are created equal)
        2. Raw, unsalted almonds (yes, raw not roasted, roasting degrades the oil in nuts doing your body harm instead of good)
        3. Turmeric (spice found in curry or separate)
        4. Lemon water (1-2 drops of Young Living Lemon Essential Oil in 10-20 oz. of filtered or reverse osmosis water)
        5. Apple Cider Vinegar (organic, raw, unfiltered, with the “mother” – I use Bragg brand)
        6. Garlic (what dinner is garlic not good in? I may never know.)
        7. YL Essential Oils for detoxing (ONLY ingest Young Living brand essential oils). If you are not a member/distributor yet, join here:
